I am currently feeding both of my dogs Canidae, but would like to add some bones for their teeth and as a reward. Being new to raw food I was curious if y'all could reccommend what kind I should ask the butcher for. Neither dog (Noley 3 yr old Golden Ret. and Coach 10 mos old GSD) have ever had bones.
Thanks
Terry
I know I'm disagreeing with the majority here, but be careful with the beef knuckle, marrow, and soup bones--they've been known to crack teeth.
I agree with you Sabrina, we use beef knuckle and femur bones here at Leerburg for pups and youngsters under 6 months old... once the adult teeth are in we don't give them anymore. The knuckle bones dry out after a day or so and get ROCK hard, not good on the teeth.
Some dogs also can become impacted from them, our office dog Rixi (now almost 13 years old) swipes knuckle bones whenever she can from one of the pups tethered in the Leerburg office...she did this day after day a few weeks ago and had a very bad case of being constipated! She was SICK!
Thanks for the help. I am not too sure that I can get Kangaroo carcasses here in Florida <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> but will definitely get the chicken necks. Can Y'all give me several suggestions as to what specifically I should ask for. I apologize for sounding like a nervous daddy, I just want what is best for my guys. Thanks again for the info.
Terry
I've found that beef ribs work wonders. They take a while for my adult dogs to consume (depending on the mood, from a couple days to a couple weeks) and they're soft enough that I've never heard of any teeth being cracked by them. My guys love it when I give them a slab of 4-6 ribs for dinner.
If you don't like to give marrow bones to adult dogs, what do you recommend? My dogs all like pressed rawhide, but they love meat much more. To date, I have only given chicken and turkey backs. I have also given beef marrow bones, but my 18 mo male can crack them.
I also feed large raw meaty bones for dinner, so the urge to chew did go down. I don't do rawhide--I used to, but the danger of impaction made me decide to stick with real bones.
