Is he going through a fear period? My four month old used to be so brave. He has always ben aloof around other people but would approach them and sniff them with a wagging tail if they called him. Now he's becoming cautious, with hackles raised. A while ago he freaked when he saw my friends in the distance (he knows them)--he wouldn't come close, but he didn't run away either. After a while he approached them really cautiously and then rushed up to them tail wagging.
We also met another dog, a white GSD. It approached us suddenly but was very friendly and gentle, he just went up to sniff my puppy's back, and he screamed, his hackles raised. But he didn't pull at the leash or run, he just stood there and a moment later his hackles went down and he seemed okay. It's just his initial reaction with things now...he seems very alert when we're walking and always looking at strange people like he's never seen one before. Should I be concerned?
Sounds like fright or flight is kicking in, 12wks to 16 wks
some cope better than others, he seems to be testing the waters, the fact you did not overeract, or pet him is good he needs to work things out for himself, the moment you pet/make a fuss this reinforces any negative behaviour, just ignore and make sure he has only posive interactions during this period...
