I have three other dogs in the house. The puppy is kept in a crate when i'm not around and I never leave him alone with the other dogs. however is it okay if I let them run together in the living room or backyard for a few minutes under supervision? He is going to train for schutzhund. i take him out for a walk 15-20 minutes twice a day and play with him many times throughout but feel that at times he isn't becoming 'tired' enough to keep him happy in the crate. he is very focused to me already so I don't know if the playing will be an issue or not. All the other dogs are smaller than him.
I'll let other wise minds speak to the schtzhnd specifics, but I can tell you that for the purpose of good dog-manners, I don't let my dog "play" with other dogs in the house. When in the company of other dogs, my pup is tied to the chair I am sitting in or is crated (in a room that the other dogs can't get to). I let mine romp around outside, under supervision 100% of the time, but being inside has a different set of rules...manners, manners, manners!
Also, how old is your pup? It might not be the best thing for a young pup to mix it up with two older dogs eager to assert pack order. Something else to think about....
I don't mind dogs romping in the house. I prefer it that way since it's always raining or cold out, more comfortable for all of us.
The pup is 4 months old. I dont allow them to do anything apart from romping (no growling or biting, no toys) so I would assume pack order shouldn't be a problem. Only the oldest dog growls at the younger ones whenever they get too rowdy, but I can easily stop him with a word. I have complete control of them (i.e. I can ask them to stop playing and look at ME, give them commands, etc.).
I guess what Im concerned about is if it will affect his training later on to know how much 'fun' it is to be with other dogs even for just a few minutes. with my last dog this hasn't been the case (she will play with me in the presence of other dogs and ignore them) but that was with the older, 'less fun' dog.
My dog has had too much play interaction with other dogs from a working perspective, it took a long time to get his obedience up to where he'd listen while other dogs are around. It all depends on your dogs temprement too, some dogs are super eager to please their handlers and will listen no matter what, my dog however, would rather get up to his own mischevious behavior than listen to me, so working under distractions with my dog takes alotta patience and alotta work, perhaps it would have been different if he had no interaction with other dogs as a puppy.
