I pretty much don't leave for any extended period. If both my husband and I have to be gone, I'll have someone I know (a vet tech I worked with for years) come in twice a day to play with and walk/feed everybody. It doesn't come up that often; with 6 dogs, 2 cats and several parrots we are pretty much tethered to the house.
How do people deal with barking dogs in hotel rooms? I don't know how my dog would react to being in a hotel room at night if someones walking down the hallway (or are they only motel type places with outdoor entry to rooms?).
Hey Mike, it's called socialization! My GSD has travelled everywhere with me, even aboard a jet for a 3 1/2 hour flight. Temperament has a lot to do with it, as well as training.
We have stayed in both kinds of hotels, outdoor and indoor entry, no problem. So far I've not experienced other nuisance dogs with barking and the only time my girl has barked is when someone knocks on the door, and that's OK! I am considerate of other people and use the remote entrances and stairs; not everyone wants to encounter a GSD! What I find neat is how quick my dog learns where our room is.
I also went camping with my last GSD in FL and she was fantastic (until FL turned all those great places like Peacock Springs, Orange Grove and Little River into State Parks). Just take your dog with you! If your dog only knows your house, yard and kennel, the adjustment will take some time.
I'll never forget the first time I stayed in a hotel with my male GSD. It was in Utah for a PSA trial and all they had was indoor entrances to the rooms. Anyway I didn't even think about it when they gave me a room right across the hall from the vending machines. Well about 2:00 in the morning somebody decided they would buy a soda. So there I am sleeping soundly when all of a sudden I'm startled awake by my 83lbs GSD slamming into the hotel room door and barking like he was going to kill somebody. Then I heard this mans voice yell holy sh*t and then he is running down the hall After I realized what had happened I started laughing my butt off.
