Q. Any suggestions to curb/minimize barking behavior other than ignoring the behavior?
Hi Cindy! I've emailed before for help with my Belgian Malinois pup and your suggestions have been helpful, particularly in regards to puppy biting. A new problem has arisen: he barks, and it appears to be motivated by him seeking my attention (there is also the possibility that the attention seeking barking behavior may result from anxiety - anxious about me leaving - but I'm not sure.) Question: Any suggestions to curb/minimize the barking behavior other than ignoring the behavior?

A. I believe I had given some suggestions about barking in the past, control the environment, don't reward barking with attention and put your crate in an area where he's not watching every little thing go on if he has a tendency to bark. This is one of those issues that seems to run in some families of dogs more than others and if your dog has a genetic tendency to be noisy or vocal when frustrated or anxious then you need to think "ahead" to situations that trigger barking and try to minimize his ability to practice it.

You may want to play a radio or tv in his crate area so he's not hearing you leave, make sure he has appropriate things to chew or occupy him in the crate and you may also need to put a sheet over the crate so he's not seeing things that stimulate him to bark.

  Response:

Good suggestions! Thank-you Cindy!

Living with Your Puppy: Establishing Pack Structure

Every new puppy owner has the same image of what they want their new dog to be like as an adult. First and foremost, everyone wants a great relationship with their dog but beyond that, those who plan on keeping their dog in their home want a calm, well-mannered, obedient house dog that minds and respects their family and friends. Those who plan on keeping their dog outside want a calm well mannered dog that is respectful to the family and is quiet in the yard or kennel. They only want their dog to bark at strangers that come near the home. New dog owners think the road to success only involves obedience training and house training new puppies. Well that is the old wives tale that is been spread for 100 years and nothing could be further from the truth.

The goal of our pack structure training program is to produce a dog that is calm and submissive and a dog that follows the rules of the pack leader. This DVD teaches people how to become a pack leader that their dog respects and loves. Most people are not born pack leaders. In fact, far from it. The majority of dog owners (many who have owned dogs their entire life) simply do not know anything about the instincts that control our dogs or how strong these instincts are in the domestic dog. Oh people may have heard that they need to be a pack leader or they may have heard they need to be an ALPHA with their dog but they do not understand what this really means or how to accomplish it.
