Product Description

Every once in a while, we see a new dog training product that blows us away. Leerburg is proud to introduce the Keeper Collars® Hidden Prong Collar. This is one of those products where design, quality, and functionality have all been taken into account. Not recommended for tying out.

SIZING

For the optimum fit always choose within the correct sizing of the size chart. Our Keeper Collar with the Leather Strap may be a better option for those looking to get a greater size range out of their collar, as the strap has three adjustable holes built in. Here's Willy, the Chocolate Lab, being measured. Measure just under the jaw and behind the ears. The measurement should be snug, not tight. When the collar is built, the necessary slack is added into the collar, so there's no worry about it being too small.

A dog with a tape measure around its neck, behind the ears. A dog with a correctly-sized Keeper collar.

As you can see, Willy measures 15.5 inches. If your dog measures 15.5" and is full grown, a 14" collar would work when loosened (orange 14"), or a 15” collar allows for more room if we wish to tighten it (black 15 inch, shown loosened). The green 16” collar would be too big for Willy (green 16 inch). If your dog has a thicker coat or is expected to grow, we suggest opting for the larger size (black).

A dog with a slightly big Keeper Collar to allow for growth. A dog with an over-sized Keeper Collar.

DESCRIPTION

The Keeper Collars® Hidden Prong Collar is not simply a cover for a prong collar. The prong is built directly into the collar, allowing for unmatched functionality and camouflaging of the prong.

These collars are designed to easily be put on and taken off. Gone are the days of struggling to pinch the prongs together. For those people who do not have a ton of dexterity in their fingers, this is going to be a huge benefit.

Because you are no longer pinching the prongs to put the collar on and take off, you do not have to worry about them eventually wearing out and becoming loose. This also eliminates the worry of your prong coming apart when you need it most. With that, you no longer need to use a backup collar. Leerburg has always recommended using a backup collar with a prong. Simply because if and when the prong fails it will fail when you need it most and maintaining control over your dog in those instances is crucial. With the Keeper Collar, there is no way for the prongs to come apart. Even if they did, the leather flat strap doubles as your back up collar.

Keeper Collars also makes achieving the perfect fit much easier. Prong collars are meant to ride high on the dog’s neck just below the base of the skull. Sizing a standard prong requires adding and removing links, which really limits the amount of adjustability.

The Keeper Collars® Hidden Prong Collar, on the other hand, are completely adjustable. We offer a variety of sizes that allows you to select the size that closest fits your dog. You can then adjust the length of the pull tab to get a perfect fit on any dog. This also allows you to easily put the collar on and off with the use of the plastic buckle or leather tab and clasp.

Prong collars are an extremely functional training tool, especially when it comes to loose leash walking. Unfortunately, they look menacing and people tend to jump to conclusions about them. Let me preface that with the pinching from a prong causes no damage to your dog’s neck, whereas allowing a dog to pull into a flat collar can put so much pressure on your dog’s trachea, resulting in permanent damage.

However, because of the appearance and an onslaught of uneducated bad publicity about prongs, people who use them correctly are often verbally accosted when taking their dogs for a walk. So if you fall into that category and are tired of the dirty looks from people when safely walking your dog down the street, we recommend taking a look at the Keeper Collars® Hidden Prong Collar.

Additional Considerations

Prong collars do not apply pressure to the dogs trachea, making them a safe alternative to a slip collar, and much safer than allowing your dog to pull into a flat collar which can cause permanent damage to the dogs wind pipe. Instead a prong collar tightens, creating a pinching sensation that is instantly released once the dog “yields to the leash” or stops pulling.

Leerburg recommends using a backup collar any time you are using a prong collar on your dog. For more information on back up collars and why we recommend them check out some of our free streaming videos on the proper use of a prong collar as well as the prong collar leash. We recommend Leerburg’s Dominant Dog Collar.

It is recommended to NOT use these collars with a retractable (flexi) lead.

This is a game changer. I was used to a Gentle Leader for my last girl, yet my new boy figured out it was blocking him from following his nose freely, so he’d try to get it off. He’s a thoroughly untrained 2 year old Rottie we got from the shelter, with a strong work drive who is also a natural tracker. So he walks with his nose and gets absorbed, pulling hard. I didn’t need to reward much when we started him on this prong collar at all! It seems to feel much more natural to him too. Gentle Leaders are anything but. We can walk him anywhere for any length of time while he gets his training on! I chose this one for ease of attachment because he was a little skittish about being handled at first, so a quick on and off was exactly what we needed and it contains the base collar so you don’t need to attach 2 things. Great product!

I LOVE this collar! This, with a lead, and praise, is all I will ever need to train (any dog I would have), in any environment! Love the snap! I have always used a prong collar to train, but hard to squeeze those prongs to take it on and off. The older I get, the harder it is on the fingers. This is a breeze. Sewn into the collar: the links don't have any opportunity to come apart on their own. Another great benefit: I don't have to hear comments about using a prong collar--which does not harm or hurt my dogs in any way--from people who think I am torturing my dogs.

We have a 100lb., female, black brindle, Cane Corso that we adopted from a Mastiff rescue org. She was fairly good on a walk, but a couple of issues that she had was stopping at every tree & light pole, and she does not like other dogs.
We've been using a slip leash that worked okay, but the main problem is that it kept slipping down her neck; so, a strong correction could have hurt her. We finally did some research on prong collars, and thought this would be a good and safe tool for us and our dog to improve her behavior, especially when she confronts other dogs. We chose the Keeper Collar because the prongs are pretty much hidden from sight, and I wouldn't need an extra safety collar. Also, where we live there are a lot of people who treat their dogs as humans (you know the type of people I'm talking about), so I know the sight of a prong collar on my dog will spark some meltdowns and nasty comments that I will take personally, and cause me to respond in kind. So, to avoid all of this, we purchased the Keeper Collar. This collar has been a godsend! When fitted and used correctly, it truly is like "power steering". Our dog is not stopping at every tree and light pole; and, when she does, just a gentle, light pressure on the collar, and she's back on my heels. The real change has been when we come across other dogs during our walks and hikes. If she takes an aggressive step forward, a firm, gentle pressure on the collar is all that's needed, and she back in her perfect heel position at my side. She even gets excited when I grab the Keeper Collar because she knows that we're then going for a walk or hike.
The only downside of the Keeper Collar is the price (especially if you have a big dog). We looked on Amazon, Ebay, and other sites, but we found that the most reasonable price was here at Leerburg. We also like Leerburg's dog training philosophy, and this was a good way to support Leerburg educating dog owners. My wife and I would give the Keeper Collar 10 stars if we could. Leerburg too deserves 10 stars because their staff patiently helped us choose the correct size, and answered all of our questions. It's definitely been worth the investment!

I purchased this collar in July 2022. It does work great for helping to control my large dog. However, I am giving this a 1 star review due to a manufacturer defect. This portion of the start that slides to loosen or tighten during use is fraying. I just realized today that the metal is not not smooth (in fact it is sharp) and causing the damage. Eventually, it is gong to sacrifice the integrity of the collar. I was not expecting this poor quality for the price paid.

If you do purchase this collar, which I said does work well, inspect it carefully before using it. If you have inside edges on the metal like my picture (I can only add one) then return it or in a short period of time you will have an expensive collar you no longer trust. I am way outside the Leerburg return policy so I wasted my money.
