A few days ago my trainings pal (Champion Cat 2 2004) quoted some numbres, Here they come:
6 years ago +/- 1000 dogs started NVBK training in Belgium
4 years ago 64 started competition at the lowest level
This year only 4 are left in the highest Level
Johan - what do you think the reasons for this are?
Basicaly there are 4 reasons in my point off vue:
First:
The largest sellection takes place in the first few years. NVBK is a tough sport and you're dog needs to perform at all levels in order to have chance off winning a competition. In those 2 years prior to competition. Dogs that have trouble with one excercise are sold to police/army or abroad. These are excellent dogs but they will lose 10 or 20 points in competition and don't stand a chance. Take for instance My dog; He is verry atletic, bites good, obedience good, but he lacks a bit off character making him a bit cautious when entering on an attack meaning that, as he stands at the moment, he would score 320/340 out off a possible 400 so i have desided to stop striving for competition and he is now my wifes ppd. Verry well trained 27 month old dog that will stand at her side when needed.
Second:
Accidents. As NVBK is a demanding sport accedents happen and a fair numbre off dogs are lost to competition due injuries
Thirth:
Money. If you need money and some American offers big money for your dog, you sell.
Forth:
Retirement off players. Most players/handlers aren't that young anymore and they retire and so do thier dogs
Why didn't those reasons apply six years ago? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
They did, but it is an ongoing selectionprocess. Some people change fast others, like me, tend to keep thier dog longer and see how far they can get with it. In fact My father told me that the 1/10 to 1/20 rule was true in the 1960's. Meaning for every 10 to 20 dogs sellected to start training with only one started competing
Are you saying only four dogs are cat 1??
Or only 4 dogs competed for champion of cat 1?
I'm not sure what you said here?
