How to Measure Your Dog for a Muzzle

Three important features of this muzzle

There are three features to this muzzle that set it aside from other muzzles. It has a front flap that can be opened to pass food rewards through, it has a neck strap that the dogs collar can be passed through (which makes the muzzle very secure if the collar is properly adjusted) and the muzzle is very flexible and easy to fit and clean.

When wearing a muzzle the vinyl nose piece should ride 1/2 inch below a line drawn between the lowest points on both eyes. The front of the muzzle should then extend 1/2 inch past the end of the dog's nose.

When sized correctly and the dog pushes into the muzzle it will not be able to move back over the eyes of your dog.

If your dog has a bite history this muzzle will work while you manage the dog and condition it to wearing a muzzle (our conditioning course is free with purchase of muzzle). Dogs with a serious bite history should be wearing a metal muzzle or a police basket style muzzle

If you are still unsure of the size to choose, measure your dog then call our office at (715) 235-6502 and we will do our best to help you decide the best style and size of muzzle for your dog.

Sizing Tips & Chart

There are several things you need to know about sizing a muzzle for your dog:

  1. The muzzle should not touch the front of your dog's nose or snout the best option is to select a size 1/2 inches longer than the nose length. If the muzzle is too long, it will be pushed back on the dog's face and obstruct their line of vision.
  2. The muzzle's circumference must be larger than your dog's "nose or snout circumference." We recommend between one and three inches larger around than your dog's muzzle circumference measurement. If the muzzle is the exact same size as your dog's nose circumference, the dog won't be able to pant. It is very important that you give your dog enough room to pant while wearing the muzzle.
  3. In addition to length and circumference, owners of some breeds (i.e. the bully breeds or flat faced breeds) need to consider the width of their dog's jaw. It is easy to pick a muzzle size with the correct length but the muzzle may not be wide enough to fit the width of the jaw. Call or email our office if you have one of these breeds and need help.

WARNING

There are several Facebook groups run by well-intentioned people who are telling dog owners to get these HUGE, HUGE muzzles. These folks claim these monster-sized muzzles allow a dog more room to pant, but fail to take several important factors into account. Poorly fitting, oversized muzzles come off far too easily--making this downright dangerous advice, especially if you have a reactive or aggressive dog.

The last thing someone in this position wants or needs is for a muzzle to come off their dog when it is needed the most. Our advice is to be very careful about listening to people who lack experience with aggressive dogs.

Literally the only basket style muzzle I could find that fit my tiny chihuahua mix comfortably without cutting into his eyes. The material is soft and flexible and I like the opening for treats as an option.

This muzzle is a great first muzzle for any dog. We bought this for our mini schnauzer puppy so that we could start muzzle conditioning right away. We practice for only a couple of minutes a day and she is has taken to it quite quickly! Great muzzle for training and conditioning!
