Q. Our 8 week old puppy is a voracious eater and is growling and guarding his food. Should we correct him for this?
I recently purchased a couple of your training streaming videos (Your Puppy 8 Weeks to 8 Months and Dealing with Dominant & Aggressive Dogs). They are very helpful and we enjoy learning from them, and I'm sure I will be pursuing others over the next several months as we train our little guy.

I recently received my new Malinois puppy and he just turned 8 weeks. He is a voracious eater and is guarding his food and growling. At 8 weeks old should this be corrected and if yes what would you recommend?

Also your puppy video mentioned toy drive and food drive, is one better than the other? Should I be encouraging one over the other for training purposes?

I really appreciate your expertise and would like to get your take...

Thanks,
Robert

A. I would not correct an 8 week old puppy for food guarding but would set up the scenario so he didn’t feel the need to guard it. You can hand feed him or give him an empty bowl and add little bits of food by hand so he learns you are not going to take it away. He needs to understand the new rules of the house and this can be done gently through merely manipulating each situation. If you start correcting him for this, you will reinforce yourself as a bully and being unfair (which I know you don’t want).

I’d read the article Ed wrote on The Groundwork to Becoming your Puppy’s Pack Leader and I'd recommend the video Pack Structure for the Family Pet.

You may also want to look over the following:
I would read our biting puppies article. You can read this to get our definition of socializing.

For young puppies, we do all the training with food while playing little chase games with toys separately. I would read our article on training dogs with Markers.

I would then HIGHLY recommend The Power of Training Dogs with Food.

If you can let me know what your ultimate goal with the puppy will be, I can make further suggestions for you. I hope this helps.

This is one of our most popular training videos for new puppy owners. Over 35 years Ed Frawley bred close to 400 litters of German Shepherd puppies. He knows what new puppy owners need to learn to end up with a calm quiet happy dog in the house. The DVD was updated in October 2010 to reflect how Ed and Cindy raise puppies in their home.

Marker training (also called clicker training or operant conditioning) is one of the most profound systems of dog training that I have seen in my 50 years of owning, breeding and training working dogs. In its most basic form, it's a method of communication that is very clear for dogs to understand. Dogs learn the marker language quickly and when they do they thrive in training. The marker system produces dogs that love to train.

In my DVD, I provide 3 1/2 hours of information to help people solve their problems with dominant dogs and aggressive dogs. This information is based on 45 years of experience training dogs. For the last 30 years I have studied the art of protection training dogs. I was a police K9 handler for 10 years, and was chairman of the training committee for the WI police dog association for a number of those years. I have bred German Shepherds for police service work for 28 years. During this time I have bred over 350 litters of working dogs. I have dogs from my kennel working in law enforcement, Search and Rescue and competing in Schutzhund all over this country. No one I know in the United States can make these claims.

The goal of our pack structure training program is to produce a dog that is calm and submissive and a dog that follows the rules of the pack leader. This DVD teaches people how to become a pack leader that their dog respects and loves. Most people are not born pack leaders. In fact, far from it. The majority of dog owners (many who have owned dogs their entire life) simply do not know anything about the instincts that control our dogs or how strong these instincts are in the domestic dog. Oh people may have heard that they need to be a pack leader or they may have heard they need to be an ALPHA with their dog but they do not understand what this really means or how to accomplish it.

Every new puppy owner has the same image of what they want their new dog to be like as an adult. First and foremost, everyone wants a great relationship with their dog but beyond that, those who plan on keeping their dog in their home want a calm, well-mannered, obedient house dog that minds and respects their family and friends. Those who plan on keeping their dog outside want a calm well mannered dog that is respectful to the family and is quiet in the yard or kennel. They only want their dog to bark at strangers that come near the home. New dog owners think the road to success only involves obedience training and house training new puppies. Well that is the old wives tale that is been spread for 100 years and nothing could be further from the truth.
