Q. My 6 month old dog did reasonably well in obedience class but he nips our daughter, chews our shoes and chases the cat. Which ecollar would you recommend?
We have a 6 month old Portugese Water Dog (weighs 40 pounds). He's an awesome dog and did reasonably well in basic obedience training... but I'm having difficulty getting him to stop jumping and nipping on my 5-year old daughter, going after shoes to chew on, and chasing our cat.

I've heard great things about your e-collar video -- before I order can you suggest the best e-collar to go with it?

Regards,
Eric

A. A 6 month old puppy needs direct supervision (much like most 5 year old kids). Instead of going right to an ecollar for this, I'd suggest more leadership and control of his free time. Many dogs do wonderful formal obedience but have less than great house manners. This is where pack structure comes in. It's a way of living with the dog and controlling the dog's freedoms in a way that establishes you as a leader in an informal way.

I'd recommend Pack Structure for the Family Pet. You might like to read some of our articles too. I'd read the article Ed wrote on The Groundwork to Becoming your Puppy’s Pack Leader and the biting puppies article. You can read this to get our definition of socializing.

With that said, there is absolutely nothing wrong with getting your dog used to the ecollar now as well. He can start wearing it, so he becomes oblivious to it because we don't want the dog to think the collar controls him. You would strive for your leadership to be the key, not the collar.

For your dog I would recommend Dogtra iQ or 7000 M, you can read about both of them on the respective webpages.

I hope this helps.

The goal of our pack structure training program is to produce a dog that is calm and submissive and a dog that follows the rules of the pack leader. This DVD teaches people how to become a pack leader that their dog respects and loves. Most people are not born pack leaders. In fact, far from it. The majority of dog owners (many who have owned dogs their entire life) simply do not know anything about the instincts that control our dogs or how strong these instincts are in the domestic dog. Oh people may have heard that they need to be a pack leader or they may have heard they need to be an ALPHA with their dog but they do not understand what this really means or how to accomplish it.

The remote collar is the most effective dog training tool that has been developed in the past 100 years. Our low level stimulation training is 100 times more humane and more effective than using "CHOKE COLLAR or PRONG COLLAR." In fact our remote collar training program eliminates the need for these other training tools. In our home we start our 16 to 20 week old puppies on our remote collar program. The levels of stimulation used in our training program are often times not even felt by many humans.
