Q. Our dog gulps down her kibble, do you have any suggestions on how to get her to chew her food?
Hi Cindy,

I hope things are well with you. We are getting on great training our two dogs but we have a problem with our golden retriever who is now?nearly three years old, she gulps down her food (we give her Hills JD nuts/kibble). We feed her twice a day, in the?morning and in the evening. To try and slow her down eating?we?have put a large smooth stone in the middle of her bowl and the nuts around it, this slowed her down a little at the start but she?has gone back to her old ways and gulps down her food?(without chewing) at an enormous speed. We have?read that this is not?good for her and?she develop bloat!

Can you suggest anything to help her chew her food, we are at our wits end!

Thank you and we await your reply.

A. You could try this bowl, Skid Stop Slow Feed Bowl.

I'd also add water to her food ahead of time and let it soak and get soft. This will be better for her digestion as well.

Skid Stop Slow Feed Bowl is a heavy duty plastic bowl designed to slow rapid eating, promote regular digestion and prevent bloating and discomfort. The simple obstructions make dogs slow down to eat. Slower eating helps to make an animal feel more full therefore reducing instances of 're-eating'.

If you love your dog, you need to read this book! It will change the way you view the health of your pet. I can tell you this from experience. Feeding commercial dog food since 1950's, I became more and more concerned about exactly what I was forcing my dogs to live on. When I did a little research, I became very critical of commercial dog food companies.
