Q. My doberman holds the tug by the handles instead of the bite area. How can I stop him from playing with the handles?
Hi Cindy,

I have The Power of Playing Tug online video, and have been playing tug with my doberman but when I let him win, some of the time he shuffles the tug in his mouth so he's holding the handle. Then he shakes it by the handle and brings it back. I tried cutting the handles off one but the he does the same but with the end of tug instead!

How can I stop him playing with the handles?

A. Attach a lightweight line or leash to the handle, and when you let him win, keep tension on the line so he can't do this. If he does try and starts mouthing it, use the line to quickly steal it away from him.

Here are the reasons we love this tug: Your hands don't get bit as much, there is room for two hands and the dogs mouth. There are no handles for the dog to self satisfy into on the OUT training. It's firm but not so hard that it causes teeth problems (like kevlar or fire hose tugs). It's smooth, so it easily slides into and out of your back pocket or training vest. It's only 1 1/2 inches in diameter so it easily goes into pockets. Our DOGS LOVE THEM.
