I’m trying to get my dog to heel and I’m stuck! He’ll sit and look at me and when I move forward he stays where he is.
Full Question:
Cindy,I am trying to train my dog to heel. I am not going to do competition heeling but I have interest in it and would like to see what I can do with him training wise. He is a one year old border collie/blue heeler mix named Tex. I'm trying to train based on what I saw from the DVD "The power of training dogs with food" and have also watched "Establishing pack structure with the family pet" and "Basic Dog Obedience." I have got Tex to sit next to me and watch and he will do this for up to 10 - 15 seconds. The problem I am now having is if I take a step forward he remains sitting in the same position. I wanted to ask because Michael pointed this out as being a spot where you could get stuck.
Thanks,
Brett
Cindy's Answer:
Try getting him to take a step forward from a standing position, see if that doesn’t help him keep his head up and get moving. Be kind of informal about it, just ask him to watch and take one step and reward. If he sits, just break him out of the sit with food and start again.
