While trying to teach stand, my dog just scoots backwards while still sitting. Do you have any suggestions for this?

Full Question:
Hi Cindy,

My puppy Cecelia knows all her basic commands except Stand. The way Michael teaches it is by having the dog sit, & then pushing the food hand towards the dog's face until they kick out their rear legs & stand. This has not worked on Cecelia - all she does is scoot backwards, still in a sitting position. I can get her to stand by having her sit & then moving the food an inch forward in front of her - is that wrong? Do you have any suggestions on this?

Thanks,

~Tori

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
You don’t push the food toward the dog’s face, I would suggest reviewing that section on the food DVD. I can’t really explain it in an email. If the dog is only scooting back then you are not getting the food positioned properly.

I personally want my dogs to do a kick out stand, but if you don’t care about the technique and get her to stand using another method, that’s fine too. Dog training isn’t like using a cookie cutter, you can certainly use what works for each individual. If you only want to use Michael’s methods, then I would keep trying and make sure to review the part of the DVD that covers teaching the mechanics for stand.

I hope this helps.
