We don't take our pup out when he is crying except at night and when we let him out he goes to the bathroom then he gets put back in the crate. However, he still continues to whine for a half hour or so in the crate when we put him in during the day. Shouldn't this start to get better soon?

Full Question:
Mr. Frawley,

I have a 10 week old Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy, who has been crate trained since we brought him home at 8 weeks. We don't take him out when he is crying except at night and when we let him out he goes to the bathroom then he gets put back in the crate. However, he still continues to whine for a half hour or so in the crate when we put him in during the day. Shouldn't this start to get better soon?

Thank you for all your time and energy,
Matt

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
2 weeks isn’t really very long in the grand scheme of things, some puppies take longer than others. There is no timeline for how long it takes to accomplish things in dog training. (anyone that tells you so is either inexperienced or not being honest) Some puppies yell or whine for weeks or months, some take a day or two. It’s a very individual thing based on puppy temperament and your skill and NOT reinforcing the wrong behaviors.

I’d recommend Your Puppy 8 weeks to 8 Months and Pack Structure for the Family Pet.

I’d read the article Ed wrote on The Groundwork to Becoming your Puppy’s Pack Leader.

We also have a great question & answer section. There is a section on crate training there.
