My dog is mostly an outside dog, but he comes in to sleep at night. After a previous incident, even if we leave him only for a short time he urinates in the house. What can I do? Also, my wife and I are expecting a baby, are there any articles we should be reading?
Full Question:
Hello Cindy,How have you guys been? Hope all is well.
A while back my GSD began urinating in an area in my home. I cleaned it with vinegar and soap and blocked him from that area. He then learned to open doors, deadbolts and doors that open in. He is too smart. He became an outside dog during the day and comes in to sleep. Now even if we leave him for a short time he on occasions will urinate. What can I do?
This is my only issue, thanks to your videos he is great in every other aspect.
Last question my wife and I are expecting a new born baby in a few months. Is there any articles or suggestions you have for us? Zeus (GSD) has never shown un-warranted aggression to anyone. He has been around children and babies and has always been fine but this one will be permanent. I have the pack structure DVD and have followed that but is there anything else I should be doing. Someone told me to give him the babies hospital blanket but I am pretty sure he would demolish it.
Thank you in advance.
Cindy's Answer:
I wouldn’t allow a dog that isn’t housetrained access to my house off leash. It’s pretty simple. If he was in the house, he’d either be on a leash with me or in a crate. Dogs have to earn freedom, they don’t automatically deserve it.
Here is a section on preventing dog bites in kids. There is an article about introducing dogs to babies in that section.
Good luck.
