What is the best dog foor for our new pup? He is constantly scratching and licking his paws. Could this be from his food?
Full Question:
Dear Ed and Cindy,We have a six month german shepherd puppy and we would like to know what is the best dog food for him. Right now we have been feeding him with the brand AUTHORITY. Is this a good quality food for him? Also we would like to know why he is constantly scratching and licking his paws. Will it be an allergy reaction from the food we are giving him? Could you please advise us what brand should we get for him? By the way, I am taking him to the park three times a week for him to play, run and teach him a basic training like sitting, walking with me and the like. It is also normal that our dog sheds (we brush him about 4 times a week). I would really appreciate If you can answer us. This is my first dog and I really care for him.
Sincerely,
Jose
Cindy's Answer:
Hi Jose,
I would definitely think about switching his food to something of much higher quality. There is corn in Authority dog food, which is one of the biggest offenders in causing skin and ear problems in dogs.
We have a great section on feeding dogs on the website.
There is a list of better choices if you choose to stay with a dry food and there is information on our dehydrated food as well as raw diets.
Shedding is part of life with a German Shepherd, we affectionately call them German Shedders. Our dogs shed some hair all the time but twice a year they “blow their coat” which means it comes out faster than you can keep up with it. This is normal, so don’t be alarmed when it happens. It usually happens in the spring and in the fall.
I hope this helps.
