My dog tries to follow us when we leave our gated estate. Do you have any ideas on what we could do to stop this behavior?

Full Question:
Hello,

We are a British couple living in Thailand and we own a Thai Dog. We've had him since he was 10 weeks old and he is now 9 months old. After reading up on Thai dog breeds we learned that they are a very stubborn breed of dog and fail to acknowledge commands at times. We live on a gated estate where he is free to run around all day with his brothers and sisters but when he sees us leave the estate he tries to follow us down the road. (The entrance to the estate is on a blind corner too). We shout "No" and try to chase him back into the estate then once we set off again he starts to follow us again. He knows he does wrong because when we try to smack him to stop him he runs away knowing that it's wrong. Do you have any ideas on what we could do to stop this behavior please? Many Thanks.

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
The only solution is to safely confine him before you leave. Smacking him after he runs off isn't going to teach him what you expect.  He runs away after you try to smack him because he doesn't want to be hit, not because he knows he is wrong.

It's normal for him to try to follow you and since dogs don't understand traffic or expectations we humans have, the kindest thing would be to find a way to kennel him when you have to leave.

I'd suggest reading some of the material on our website about training and leadership.  We have a number of eBooks, which include topics that may help you.
