Should I take my dog for a loose leash walk first before our training sessions?
Full Question:
Cindy, I'm new to the world of competitive dog obedience (getting ready for Novice A this spring) and have a question about the order of training. In my current routine, I take her to a local park where we train for about 30 minutes. After ending on a high note, I have been taking her for about a 40 minute loose leash walk around the park. I believe I heard on one of the videos something about putting the dog away after training so they could process what they learned. My question is should I take her for the loose leash walk first, alternate the order, or does the order matter? Thank you.
Cindy's Answer:
I like to work my dogs while they are fresh and raring to go, so I don't usually exercise them before training unless I have a dog that is so energetic they can't focus without burning off some steam first. I typically train my dogs, then crate them for 10-15 minutes before we do much of anything else. That's just my routine though, if what you are doing is working for your dog then there is nothing wrong with it.
Like all things relating to training, it's dog dependent.
