Looking for information/article/video on teaching our dog to out an object.
Full Question:
Looking for information/article/video on teaching our dog to out an object. We have 3 dogs and 2 are great at releasing the object when given the command out, however our 1 1/2 year old Mal is not so good to be nice. Any help recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you.
Cindy's Answer:
Are you having issues with random household objects the dog grabs or toys/items you are using to play with the dog?
User Response:
Toys and items using to play with. As an example, he retrieves a ball or Kong very well but getting him to drop it is a challenge. I always mark it when he does but we have made little progress.
Cindy's Answer:
We have a couple of videos that will help. First off, I would switch to a toy that is easier to stabilize while he learns the rules of the game. A ball or a Kong is not a toy I use with dogs that don't understand a clear OUT command. It's too hard to control the toy and it sets you up for conflict with the dog and only encourages the dog to be more possessive. I only use a tug for teaching this skill.
Our training DVD, The Power of Playing Tug, addresses the OUT in detail. Basically, the dog has to learn in order to keep the game going they must let go. It's not possible to do this with a ball or Kong with a dog that has already taken charge of the game and is not reliably outing. I'd put the ball and kong away for this dog and only use a tug while he learns the rules.
We also have an online course on Functional Play, you can see a free preview of the course if you follow the link.
