My client's young Frenchie is showing aggression. Do you have any advice?
Full Question:
Hi Cindy,I train dogs in the UK and have recently been helping a family with a 7 month old Frenchie. When I first went round it was because he was showing aggression over food and objects but not just his own. If anyone had food he could show signs of aggression toward them. The family was getting ready to move house so there were boxes around and he started to guard the boxes.
He was a nice dog but he jumped up, pulled on lead, barked at dogs on lead as well. We stopped all of those things and I explained that he must be at the bottom of the structure. We agreed that he would have a line attached to his collar around the house in case he showed aggression and needed to be corrected. (They also have 2 young girls). After 7 days, I got a message to say he was like a different dog.
Family moved, slipped on the training due to kids school holidays etc and he then bit 2 workmen in the new house. I have advised for them to use the utility room as a kennel and restart training.
Any advice?
Cindy's Answer:
Dogs like this need consistent rules and structure, sometimes for the life of the dog. The average dog owner doesn't understand it's a lifestyle that they need to adhere to, not something they do for 6 weeks and then go back to the old ways.
Management at all times, on lead (both inside and outside) and lots of structure; the dog should be kennel trained, taught to lay on a place bed and not allowed resources that he may guard. I might also train him to wear a muzzle as well, if he's biting people at 7 months old then I would be a bit concerned about increasing aggression as he reaches maturity.

User Response:
Thanks so much for your help, that's what I thought. Unfortunately the owners did not follow guidelines and the dog bit another family member. The vets had advised them that he needed more love and reward not strict guidelines. They listened to the vet. They have now rehomed him which is a crying shame. Thank you though.
