Good morning!
The answer is "it depends". It depends on the puppy's overall temperament and drive, the training goals for that puppy(sport dog or pet), the size of the dog (I might do leash pressure early with a Rottweiler and wait to do it with a cocker spaniel) and not so much the age.
The answer about the equipment is also "it depends". Based on the the answers I gave above, I might use a slip lead, a flat collar, a slip collar or a prong collar. If I use a prong collar the size and material (chrome, stainless, plastic) will also depend on the dog's size, coat length and overall sensitivity of the dog.
If you can give me more information about the puppy in question I may be able to give more specific advice.
