My 6 month old pup loves to chew on sticks and branches after a play session but that causes him to vomit wood chips afterwards. Any suggestions or is it OK for him to chew on sticks?
Full Question:
Hi! Thank you for great contents on YouTube! My 6months old mini Australian shepherd loves to chew on sticks and branches when tired after play session and that cause vomiting wood chips afterwards. Any suggestions to stop that behavior or is it ok for him to chew on sticks? Thank you!
Cindy's Answer:
I would not allow this behavior. Not only because of the vomiting that he's doing, but it could cause a blockage of his digestive tract. My friend recently had to have one of her dog's eyes surgically removed because the dog was running with a stick in her mouth and the end went through the roof of her mouth into the back of her eye. Terrible experience for everyone! Dogs do love sticks but they can be a problem and I personally don't risk it with my own crew.
If you are doing structured play with your dog then have him on a long line and simply don't allow him to do this or move to a location where it's not an option. You could give him something else to chew and carry. We offer a few "safe sticks" made for dogs to play with that may be an option for him.
