Do I have to quit Schutzhund because my dogs hips are bad?

Full Question:
Hi Cindy:

I had my 3 year old German Shepherd female hips xrayed. She has her CGC and BH in the fall I want to go for her Schutzhund 1. I also have her in SAR 6 months training. At the trainer's request she suggested to have my dogs hips xrayed. They were not good. I will have her spayed of course. I was very disappointed because her whole line parents grandparents were all good. My question is do I have to quit Schutzhund? She does very well on the jumps and a frame so I could stop training on the jump until trial. Do I now treat her as a lame animal or continue what we are doing to keep her strong. The Doctor gave me a disk. Do you have to see. I guess it all depends on the degree or how bad they are. The vet only said he would be concerned about the jump not the a frame. What about running after her ball?

Thanks,
Sandy

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
Some dogs with dysplasia work in sports without a problem. I’d make sure to keep her in top physical condition through low impact exercise like walking, swimming or using the underwater treadmill.

I would probably also consult with a rehab vet AND an orthopedic specialist, for an exercise plan and professional opinion of the prognosis for working her long term. Sometimes we need to change our goals to fit what is best for the dog. My dog was injured 6 months ago at the beginning of a VERY promising working career. He may never be able to return to our sport of choice (Mondioring) but I will continue to work him in activities that are less physically taxing for him (Agility, competitive obedience). Without consulting a vet who specializes in sports medicine, I’m not sure I would work him at all. She’s been critical in devising a plan to build his strength without worsening his injury.

I hope this helps.
