A Message from Ed Frawley on Prong Collars

Additional sizing and product information can be found below after Ed's message.

I call using a prong collar "Power Steering for Dogs." A prong is probably the most misunderstood training tool there is in dog work, next to the whip. So many people take one look at it and say, "Oh! I could never use that on my dog!" Then when I explain how it's used and why, they call back and say "Ed, this is the greatest thing since sliced bread!"

I get asked all the time if a prong collar is appropriate for puppies. The answer is very simple. If properly used, a prong is one of the most humane and effect training tools there are. Can it be abused? Absolutely. Any training tool can be abused. If you want to learn how to train with a prong collar, enroll in my Basic Dog Obedience course.

When a prong collar is used in training, the handler must first realize that a dog who required a level 8 correction before will now, with a prong, probably require a level 2 or level 3 correction. What this means is that a strong dog that had so much drive that it was too much for a small person to handle is now easily controllable without a lot of effort.

If you are a new Schutzhund trainer or a police service dog handler, you are going to need a prong collar.

The first people I usually recommend for the prong collars have 3 to 4 month old pups that pull them down the street when they take them for a walk. These dogs need a prong. There is no correction needed from the handler when a prong is worn during walks. The pup (or dog) gives itself a correction when he hits the end of the leash.

When this happens, the handler is there to soothe the shock with praise if the pup yelps. Within one training session every dog is going to be walking slowly by his handler, there is no longer any pulling. In addition the handler is not the bad guy in this work. How could he be? He is soothing and praising the dog after it yelped from a self-induced correction when it hit the end of the leash?

Older dogs sometimes need a prong collar when normal corrections with a choke collar do not have the intended results (which means they do not effect the dog). My feeling is that any time a dog requires a level 7 correction for normal training, he needs to be worked with a prong collar from that point on.

It's the job of the handler to read their dog. New handlers tend to go out and give the same level of correction with a prong that they did with a choke collar. This is unfair to the dog.

A prong collar is designed to be snug, almost tight, on the dog's neck. Many handlers need to take a link or two out of the collar to get the correct fit. Keep these links. If you have a young dog, you will probably need to use them when the dog grows up. The point is that if a prong collar is too loose on a dog's neck, the collar loses its effectiveness.

Some dogs have very large necks, if you have such a dog you may have to purchase additional links for the collars which can be purchased separately.

With regards,

Regards, Ed Frawley

Prong collars do not apply pressure to the dogs trachea, making them a safe alternative to a slip collar, and much safer than allowing your dog to pull into a flat collar which can cause permanent damage to the dogs wind pipe. Instead a prong collar tightens, creating a pinching sensation that is instantly released once the dog “yields to the leash” or stops pulling.

Leerburg strongly recommends using a backup collar any time you are using a prong collar is on your dog. For more information on back up collars and why we recommend them check out some of our free streaming videos on the proper use of a prong collar as well as the prong collar leash. We recommend Leerburg’s Dominant Dog Collar.

Prong collars should NOT be used with a retractable (flexi) lead.

While the prong collar worked exactly as it should, the quick release clasp lasted barely 5 weeks. Using the collar, my 60 lb. Malinois responded with fingertip control. On a scale of 1-10, I don't think I ever need more than a "2" correction. Without the prong collar, she's a strong puller (and won't take treats on walks). However, this morning when I went to put it on, the clasp fell apart and the collar is useless. Leerburg did include a regular connector (non-mechanical) as a replacement; my fault for not being able to find that box now.

This collar is well made, heavy compared to my stainless steel collar, I liked the color, plus the feature of the snap. I was planning to use it on my corgi but I didn't realized that it was not made for short legged dogs. I still can't figure out why you'd put a buckle on the area of the throat, I guess if you have a large dog it's not a problem to buckle the collar on, but with a small dog you're buckling it on blind otherwise you'd have to get on your hands and knees. They neglect to tell you that you shouldn't move the buckle to another location because then the collar falls off which is dangerous. Leerburg customer service was great in replacing the collar but the same thing happened. They sell the buckles seperately so had bought one for my other Herb springer prong collar and put the buckle on and the collar then fell off. I think they should post some where in the description that the buckle can't be used on other collars and that you shouldn't move the buckle as the prongs are bent a certain way, even though it was easy enough to move. Great for all you folks with a tall dog, not made for short legged dogs which is why I'm giving it a 4 rating. After it fell off a couple of times I couldn't trust it to stay on my dog.

If I could give this a minue 5 I would. I don't know what's wrong with this collar, my other Herm Springer after 8 years is still working. I bought this collar, and returned it because it kept falling off my dog. I tried to spread the prongs so they wouldn't disconnect and that still didn't work. Though it was past the return date, Leerburg was kind enough to replace it with another collar. I'm not using this for field work, just walking the dog and obedience. My dog was rolling around on the grass and the 2nd collar fell off. I'm done with this collar as I can't trust it .! The picture shows enlarged I think a smaller ring that swivels, so I thought it was like my old collar, it wasn't, 2 regular size rings. I like the smaller swivel ring for attaching a short line to while training. Why they put the buckle opposite the ring so you have to reach under the dogs neck to buckle it is beyond me. Probably works great on a large dog but on a small dog like a corgi, you're trying to buckle it blind. Just didn't work for me, and moving the buckle doesn't work either. Pretty collar but not for me.

After ordering one of these buckles for my service dog, I decided to buy more buckles for his non-work collar and three of my other (pet) dogs as well. The buckles are high quality and make putting on and taking off the prong collars so much easier. My order shipped fast just like my previous order. I will continue to shop here for future needs. Thank you again!

I purchased this collar for three reasons, the brand (I love it), the color and mostly I wanted to try the buckle latch. I waited a week to leave my review because I wanted to know how the latch would work out. It is amazing, and I wish I had one years and years ago. It is so much easier to put on the dog but the best part is taking it back off the dog. The dog doesn't even notice anymore. I took the chance on the high price because Leerburg had it made and in my 20+ years of shopping here I have never been disapointed. I ended up buying another one, well worth the money.

this is a game-changer for dog owners who have trouble pinching the prongs together on a regular prong collar. I like that I can purchase the buckle alone or the full collar/buckle set up already installed. I first bought the buckle for my older prong and loved it so much I got a new collar and buckle set up in a different finish. (curogan & antique brass)
