"US Makes Strides Against 'Ecoterrorism'"

"The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and other government officials recently arrested six animal rights activists and environmental radicals several years after the alleged crimes were committed. The world of ecoterrorism is a tough one for law enforcement officials to breach, but the recent arrests show that the agencies are making progress against those conducting firebombings and other criminal acts. The FBI has about 1200 ecoterrorist cases open and unsolved and many range from vandalism to arson. The groups that are the most notable in the arena include the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) and the Earth Liberation Front (ELF), but these groups generally claim credit for their actions. However, these groups also have amorphous leadership and organizational structures, making it more difficult for authorities to catch perpetrators of crimes. While much of the propaganda from these groups notes that their actions are not aimed at harming people or animals and none of the attacks have injured or killed anyone, authorities are growing increasingly concerned about the threats facing researchers and their families, which have grown significantly in recent years."
