I searched around this site and I couldn’t find what I was looking for, so I hope you can direct me or make suggestions.
My female Dakota has a great ball drive and is a high-energy dog. We started “find it” where she is placed in a down/stay in a room in the house behind a closed door and I go into an adjoining room and hide her ball. When I return I open the door and tell her “ok, find it” and she always does. I would like to teach her to find other things as well and I don’t really know anything about tracking.
She doesn’t tire easy and this has been a great release for her energy, not to mention a lot of fun! She is always so proud and looks absolutely blissful. But the ball is becoming too easy for her, and I would like to keep it challenging.
For right now I am not looking into track training, it’s more of an activity for us to enjoy together and bring out her great qualities.
Thanks a bunch!!!
Merry Christmas!!

You mean for games and exercise, right? Not formal training? I like this site, which is directed toward kids, but is full of dog activities for pet dogs.
Here's the "find it" part, but the site has pages of activities.

I wish I had known about it before I did. I was helping with a dog last year who LOOOVED to track things, outdoors and in, and whose owners didn't know how to pursue that informally; when I typed in DOGS, SCENT GAMES, up popped that site, loaded with fun stuff for pet dogs.

I found it when I was looking for info on different ways to teach the AKC scent articles. I used to do it with the old tie down method. I new there had to be a better way. I think I'm going to become a "title ho" with my dog. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Connie, thank you very much!! This is exactly what I was looking for! I didn't know how to refer to it, but now I got it “informal tracking.”
Bob I appreciate your effort as well.
Thanks!

I have a lab mix that we have taught "get that cat" to... basically, he gets to chase our cats if we see the cats on the dinner table, kitchen counter, etc. Originally, we just used it as a deterrent to keep the cats away from our food.
Well, the other night, somebody didn't close the front door all the way, and I got up at about 9 or 10 to find the front door wide open and all 3 cats outside. Not a big deal for some people but our cats have always been inside cats and it was freezing outside so they would have had a rough night if we left them outside.
Within 15 minutes or so, my lab had found and cornered each of them. He had a blast. I've never done any training for any type of work with any pets, but he knew "get that cat" and seemed to really understand that he was doing something useful. It was really eye opening to see him work like that... I'll have to look more into those Scent games. Thanks for the link.

That is a great story. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
At first i was like, what! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />
But it did serve a wonderful purpose. I don't know if I would be willing to teach Forrest that, maybe Dakota. I have enough trouble trying to stop him from chasing and scaring the fur off of them.lol!

I probably should have pointed out that my lab mix grew up around cats and has proven on multiple occasions that he can act appropriately around them.
I have another dog that I wouldn't encourage or allow that sort of behavior with. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />
