Hi
I am lloking for opinions, advice and suggestions. I live in Aberdeen, Scotland and used to work GSDs. However I am now looking for a new addition. I am looking for a dog with minimal shedding, yet retaining the qualities and drives for trainability in working trials a bit like Schutzhund but more difficult tracking (think FH). I am considering 2 breeds Giant Schnauzers and Russian Black terriers. I have recently learnt that the RBT"s have health problems with hips. I was hoping I could ask for advice regarding the choice between theses 2 breeds.
Thanks
Yash
The only thing I can tell you is that the Giant Schnauzer has been used in police work and the Black Russian Terrier was actually created for that type work. I think it would be important to get a dog from working lines, especially in the case of the Schnauzer.
I have seen two BRT's both duds. I have seen more Giant schnauzers, and some of them were pretty cool. Either way, take someone with you to look at the puppies and evaluate their potential. Good Luck.
I looked up both dogs. Alot will depend on where they are going to be kept, how much time you have to devote to their training and grooming. Here's the site I looked them up with and it contained some good info on each breed.
BRTs are terrific dogs....but it helps to get them from a good breeder....meaning eastern european or, better, Russian or Ukrainian. I live in Poland and own one....from Anna Baranova's kennel. He is a top flight personal protection dog. Thats what they were bred for by the Soviets...and thats what they are (they are being turned into show dogs by the AKC...and were at westminster this year...sigh
I should add.....as per training, they are not particularly 'hard' dogs....and they need special training. They are very aggressive though if not socialized....not dog aggressive, but can be very protective of their handler....which they bond to in the extreme.
They, as someone mentioned, cant be left in a kennel....they sleep next to your bed, period. They are a bit co-dependent that way But I think they are excellent working dogs. Along with Giants, Rotts, GSDs and Mals.
Hello
Thanks for your comments.
I am keen to get into working trials, a sport where nosework and the jumps take the majority of the marks. I like the BRT look but am concerned about the fact that they have very high hip scores.
wishing you all a Happy New Year.
