I know this has been covered in bits and pieces throughout older threads, but I can't seem to find any actual threads specifically discussing how people train their dogs in a 2+ dog household from a command perspective.
As eeeverybody probably knows (because I won't shut up about it I am planning on getting a dutch shepherd pup in the next 4 or 5 months. My GSD is trained in dutch because its a language i speak fluently and its just what seemed easiest to do at the time. Well, now I'm getting a dutch shepherd, so although it'd be kinda ironic to train the dutch dog in german and the german dog in dutch, that'd be kinda weird to me. How do you multidog household people deal with this and how would you suggest I do it? Should I find alternative dutch commands to train the dutchie with, or will they be OK to both be taught the same commands preceded by their name? Will they understand this? Or will my GSD think I'm correcting him if I tell my dutchie "phui"?

If I had to do it over agian I would of taught each dog in distinctly different languages. My first GSD is taught in English, the second in Germish and the third I'm trying real hard to teach in German. I run into problems when I give the "crate" command and have all three dogs pack themselves into one crate. I yell "NO" at the kids and poor Maggie thinks I'm yelling at her. I say OK to one of the kids while at the park and the dogs think they've been released and try to fly into three different directions along with my three kids Next time I'll use French or Spanish or Klingon or something

Mr. Schoonbrood,
I too do what Mr. Curbow does. When I want one dog to do some thing and not the other two, I preceed the command by the dog's name. If I bellow 'come' I expect all three to come to me now. For example, if I bellow 'Brio! Come, or Sitz, or Platz, or Aus, or Bleib, orwhatever!' I expect Brio to respond now. The same goes for Max, or Freya.
It takes a little time to emphasize in training the discreet connection of a name to a command but it can be a very rewarding little distinction.
Mine will respond to global commands but remain planted if I preceed a command with one of their names.
Two more cents.
Mike A.

I too do what Al C. and Mike A. do; I precede the command with the dog's name. So far it has worked great.

Cool, thanks everyone! It seems it's all the small details of owning your first 2nd dog that gets ya, stuff you'd ordinarily never have to even think about with only 1 dog. You get everything worked out for your one dog, your daily routine, your training, your time availability... then you go and screw it all up with another puppy!

I always thought Czech commands sort of sounded like Klingon. And I mean that in a good way.

I had to follow the name preceding the command form of direction with my dogs because my stupid self (being an over-acheiver) taught my first dog commands in 4 differant languages. Its still pretty fun that he can "speak" spanish, english, german and french but it was a pain in the a** when I got the second dog. Saying the name first works great if I just want one of the dogs and if I just say a command, they both listen.
