Hi Ed,
I have a 41/2 month old German Shepherd, I am determined to do right by my dog and give him the training he deserve. I want to train Maverick to do protection work as we live in a bad area of town and I have small children and my partner works nights. I would like a list from you of all videos and training equipment I should buy from you to do so. I already purchased how to raise a working dog but it was not the right video for my situation. I appreciate the help.
I would have to say that you underestimate the importance of the work in HOW TO RAISE A WORKING PUPPY - the experience gained by the dog in doing the work in that DVD builds experience and charachter in the dog.
In the first 12 to 14 months I recommend that DVD - then:
You need a ball on a sting http://leerburg.com/788.htm and a mini tug (cant remmeber the product number)along with the 20 ft cotton line
I hesitate to make a long list of equipment. Some people can use some things while others dont need them.
I need to sit down one of these days when I have time and make a detailed list. Hard to find time but I will do it. I think a web page where there is a buy now buttong on the list and people can go down and click what they want/need would be a good idea.
How often do you find we rush the 'protection' work on a very young dog. Rather than emphasising the other more general training we should be doing the first year?
Ed's answer: (edited in)
This is one of the biggest problems I see wiuth new (and experienced trainers) In my opinion its a huge mistake. People have high drive pups and they rusk the work. With many dogs there is not a lot of room for error so when mistakes happen people find themselves trying to fix problems rather than train their dog.
And how badly does that mess up the dog?

Some things you shouldn't be doing with a youth, others you should be doing as soon as possible, and yet others you could be doing, but if you screw them up the dog's work will suffer for it.
I think some of you might have misunderstood my post. I am well aware that Maverick need basic obedience before protection work and that you do not start protection work with your dog before they are mature enough to do so. I was asking Ed for preparational videos. You don't do your homework the night before a test. I want to be prepared and learn all I can before we make that step. I want to have the right equipment and the knowledge just so that I don't screw up MAv's potential for life. I apologise if I was unclear in any way.
After watching the DVD and reading some posts here, I feel like there is a sea of information that I'm missing. Like how do I start bite training? What tools do I use? What's the correct way to use them? How do I build Mav's confidence and drives? What do I allow people to do with my dog and what don't I allow? I have a family and the dog still needs to be able to interact with the family members. How do I know that Mav has the right personality to be a good at protection work? How are his nerves? How do you evaluate that? It seems like I have a million questions. I live pretty far up northern Canada and there is no ressources available to me here. I just want to make sure I have all the information I need.
I was just wondering how far up north you are? I am in the Great White North myself and always on the scrounge for some people to work with. I have a mixed dog so there are some formal clubs that I don't qualify for.
BTW... many of the questions you mentioned, in your later post, I also share. I will be adding this one to my fave's <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
Go back to the main page of this site and click on training articles and you will find a whole host of information that Mr. Frawley has written some of which addresses your exact questions. I mean there are literally 1000s of pages of information and I bet they answer most if not all your questions.
Good luck,
