Play play play play play! Play in drive, play with a ball, play with a toy, play tug, play with a towel, do obedience work with a toy, run with the dog, teach the dog to retrieve so you can play fetch. If a dog is having fun, he is bonding with you because you are the source of this fun. Get the DVD "Building Drive & Focus" from Leerburg if you need help on working your dog in drive.
I really believe one of the best ways of bonding with a pup is to show the pup that everything he gets comes from you. In his eyes he needs to think the day starts because you make it that way. Have him earn all positive things from you. Praise him for any eye contact or acknowledgement he gives you. Use food and play time as a reward. Do not fuss over him without him giving you something first, this could be as simple as quick eye contact or him offering a sit.
Hi Brian, i'll tell you what i've done with great results.
#1 crate the dog in the room your in most of the time.
#2 fun obedience with lots of praise and timely rewards.
#3 brush your dog a lot.
#4 frequent walks on a short leash
#5 take the dog on errands with you whenever you can
#6 treat your dog fairly, but remember they're dogs and not children(like my wife thinks), they bond with leadership
#7 enjoy your pup, and try not to get frustrated when he/she acts like a pup.
I believe all these things together are part of building trust and respect, and trust and respect is bonding, just my take on the whole thing, good luck with your dog,
