i have done it. i have taught my 10 month old the keep away game!!! i feel like i am really in a hole here now, i have a couple of ideas on how i am going to go about teaching him to retrieve all the way back to me, but i need some help from you guys, has anyone accidentally taught their dog to play keep away when you throw the ball or tug, etc.
my pup is so consumed with the "game" that if i threw a rock he would go get it and hold it in his mouth and wait about 10 feet away from me laying down watching me waiting for me to come "get him". i could have food or a ball on a string or tug and i could be moving it around like crazy but he will always prefer to hold on to what he has first (or what he has retreived). needless to say the pup has alot of dead-prey drive with calm grips, but how can i fix this???
How about a 25' flexi, throw the item, he retreives it, you command him back, he doesn't listen, you have the ability to correct in your hand, that's how i started my 9mo old and he brings the item back every time. Early on i traded for a treat so he would hand me the ball, hope this helps,
AL
he recalls well for food or toy, really quick and hard and stright into the "pocket" in front, its only when he is retrieving that he has a problem, i hardly ever out him or take things away from him, so i know he isnt really worried about that, i think he just loves the game of keep away. i will ponder this for sure, he by no means has had very much OB on him, he is still raw, i have only had him for a few months, i have been only playing with him while a leash so that i can control him and not let him play the game. his drives are high but he really likes the keep away game.
i am still incorporating only motivation in his OB training, he is still an exuberant puppy at this point, i am not in any hurry to get a finished retreive for competition, but i know that what he learns with toys and the foundations in general will carry over in a year to his dumbell work. thank you and i will think harder of things to do to promote close proximity such as "into my arms" etc.
