If a Rottweiler had done the same thing, would there be such fanfare over the dog? I realize it was a freak accident but geez.... only a golden retriever could turn a tragedy into good PR!

People 'lining up' to adopt her - there is a waiting list of people wanting to adopt this dog - why - because she is a Golden Retriever? No, because she's received National media attention for (accidentally) killing a little girl. It can't be because of the breed, because there are hundreds of purebred GR's in rescue, shelters and cheap BYB. It seems morbid to me that the reason people are lining up to adopt this dog is because of the dogs' involvement in a little girls' death. Yuk.
and it's true - if this had been a Rott, a Pitt, or even a GSD - the PR would have been negative - it would have been the dogs' fault - and the dog would have been killed, the breed reputation damaged. Sick.

Forget the politics, forget the breed, forget the dog. Achild has died and a family is in mourning. Nothing takes precedence over the life of a child. My heart breaks for the little girls family and they will be in my prayers. A very tragic story.

Yes this is sad - but DO NOT KID youself that this was the first time this dog had exhibited strong prey drive around the children. I will guarantee you that similar incidents have happened before and the parents either ignored them or described them as cute. This tanslates into an owner problem and not a dog poroblem. It was not an aggression problem, it was a lack of training and lack of pack drive training. Had this doig looked at the child as a higher level pack member this would never have happened.
Very Sad because it never had to happen.

The dog could be the nicest in the world, n I could be the biggest fan of goldens in the world... I wouldn't want the dog knowing that history, it's sick. They should have adopted the dog out to people who don't know the story.

Terry -
I understand your point, but to your point I say don't forget the breed, don't forget the dog....because if you do you cannot correct what went wrong here. ANY animal can cause serious injury to a child, so what to do to help prevent such tragedy in the future, and as Ed said, know what the warning signs are early on and then correct them, and never allow your child to be in, what all can see now as a hazardous situation instead of one so seemingly innocent.

I could not agree more, that is why I remind everyone who reads my contributions to: "Treat them like animals"
No child should be left alone with an animal. As the owner of a Golden Ret. I know full well that they can be aggressive, that is why my 11 yr. old son and 10 yr old daughter are never left alone with either of my dogs and they are not allowed to take them for a walk without me going with them. They are animals and as such are capable of aggression and biting, regardless of the breed or the unjustified media perception of any particular breed.
The main point I was making is that we all should feel the loss of a child and sympathize with the pain that the parents are obviously feeling. I just did not want to have this thread turn into a breed bashing when the focus for me is the loss of a child.

Here is an update to the original article.
article update
I'm not an experienced trainer or a behaviorist. But I don't see anything in this article where any of the dog people or "professionals" are sufficiently addressing the problem with this dog. It seems to be all about placing the dog with a loving family. I'm sure that's the kind of home she came from. So here's an opportunity for them to educate dog owners and the public- "Hey, people, quit going around HUA and learn something about how dogs think and act." But, no.
I live a few miles from this place and I know they have a different "mission" than your typical animal shelter. And then a drawing for potential families? That's bordering on sick.
Suppose you were an idiot.
Suppose you were a member of Congress.
But I repeat myself.
