Does anyone have advice for a young dog that wolfs down its food to the extent that it chokes on it sometimes? He was fed with more dominant dogs before his new home, has dogs that eat with him but don't even attempt to eat his food now, but continues to eat very fast. Is there a way to teach him to slow down a bit?
Thanks.
my female has always eaten very fast & she is on a raw diet & eats chicken qtrs & turkey necks etc. SHe has been an only dog until recently. (4 months ago)Now that I have a male, also, she has not sped up her eating, nor has she slowed it down any. She rarely ever chokes nor does he but occasionally they both do. It just happens on occasion no mater how fast or slow they eat or what they eat. They just spit it back out & chew it better & then swallow again. I don't really worry about it. Dogs are designed to gulp their food in fairly large pieces. They just don't have the table manners that people do.
I recently saw a friend put a choke chain in the food bowl with the dry food for her dog. That makes the dog slow down and eat around the choke chain. It is quite a simple solution for that particular dog.
my dog eats so fast he would just inhale the chain, so i wouldnt do it. I always went with ed's advice about them having 10-15min to eat or they dont get it. so my dogs eat very fast and sometimes hak and choke a little but they always work it out
the choke chain's a good idea. it's not good for much else i have in the past put a couple good-sized rocks in food bowls, that might slow him down some. don't use little rocks!! and i wouldn't reccomend it if he's a rock-chewer.
