I have a 3 year old male lab. He is very healthy and full of energy. BUT, he continually has a waxy funk draining from his right ear. Initially I took him to the vet because I assumed it was an infection. We did the antibotic thing and a rinse solution. We have tried 4 or 5 different antibotics but nothing completely knocks it out in any permanant manner. I gave up on the vet for now anyway.
I have been using a 50% alcohol 50% vinegar solution for a while. It helps some but does not eliminate the drainage. I thins it out and the funk is not a dark brown/black waxy type thing.
His diet is raw chicken backs/necks with vitamin supplements such as B, C, E and flax oil.
Any solutions would be appreciated.
I have a 9yr old lab who also has an unusual amount of dark ear wax. I flush his ears with a medicated aloe based ear wash and wipe out the ear using a cotton 2x2 (the dog loves this!) If I would notice a foul smell; then I would further medicate him with Panalog (salve in a tube) by squirting some in his ear and then gently massaging.
I wouldn't advise using alcohol 50% base as this will dry out the ear and irritate it.
I also tried the alcohol-vinegar solution but it just made the ears stink. Then I tried Purple power solution and it cleared up the ears, the smell and the irritation. Now I use it only twice a month when I see ear wax stains. My dog stopped scratching too and the ears are nice light pink not raw anymore.
Cleaning floppy ears once a week is normal but I do it less often with purple power.
