However, the Dyson seems to inspire an almost religious devotion among pet owners.
I finally retired my Hoover last year. A friend had a Dyson and I was fairly impressed with it's abilty to pull dog hair from the carpet.
I got mine, vacuumed the carpet with the Hoover and then hit the carpet with the Dyson. I pulled out two more canisters of dog hair & dirt. The operating sound of the Dyson is much quieter than the Hoover and it's lighter. I like having the extension hose right there. Having the canister rather than having to mess around with bags is a nice feature too.
I LOVE my Dyson. I did the same think vaccumed with my old one and immediately went over the living room with the Dyson - I could not beleive how much hair and junk it picked up! It is so woth the money - but I would get the purple one - it has nice attachments for pet hair and and easy to use extension wand

The devotion is justified - this is one of those things that makes me question CR's methods. My wife's parents have the Hoover that they recommend; and honestly, it just doesn't come close to our Dyson. Not only does it not seem to work as well, it's extraordinarily heavy, clumsy, and just plasticy and cheap; and they've had it repaired twice since they got it about a year ago. After trying ours, they've decided to get rid of it and get a Dyson, too.
Plus I don't care for the fact that Hoover tried to steal Dyson's design, thinking they could out-lawyer him.
If you do get a Dyson, go to Sam's or Costco - we got ours for $100 less than at Best Buy or Amazon. The 'animal' version just includes an accessory that you can buy seperately. It's great for furniture and cars. I also recommend getting the low-reach floor attachment.
OK, nobody go near betty's dyson , i'm gonna go buy one today. Hopefully the bottem plastic part is sturdy, elvis hasn't figured out that the vacuum isn't the enemy yet....
AL
I had one YEARS ago, not the 'animal' but the first one that they brought out. Cost me a small fortune, but WOW! I LOVED it!!!! We have mainly laminate here, but I would buy another one tomorrow if I had the money to spare.
When we first got ours about a year ago, the wife swears she lifted hair out of the carpet from dogs we had years ago. EEEEEEEEEEWWWWWW!!
I wont go that far, but it does a great job.
I bought my wife the one they call THE BALL in the animal model. We received it the day after the cleaning service came ( I had to get a cleaning service as a compramise to get my GSD)My wife had to empty it 7 times. NICEEEEEE
