I've been fostering for our rescue group for 2yrs and now have my first heartworm positive foster. She has begun treatment and has to stay on cage rest for the next 14 days and then very restricted excercise for the next 14.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep her quiet/entertained for so long without any excercise? Right now she is constantly digging at her crate trying to get out.
She is not food motivated at all, kongs, bones, ect are of no interest to her.
She loves her toys, but when I put them in the crate, they are not moving so she ignores them.
I know many people on this forum have dogs with very high activity levels; so does anyone have any ideas that don't involve exercise?
When my Malinois severed a tendon in her foot this past summer, she was on crate rest for 3 weeks and restricted exercise for 2 and half months after that.
I had to put the elizabethan collar on her in the crate, otherwise she would spin. She whined practically non-stop while in the crate and I just tuned it out after a while. I gave her plenty of rawhides and bones to keep her occupied. There really isn't a whole lot you can do except just keep the dog in it's crate with a really tasty chew.
Have you tried marrow bones? My older dog won't touch raw hides or Kongs but he loves raw marrow bones.
The joint/tendon part of a cow or some other big animal is also good, shouldn't hurt the teeth as much as a leg bone would, and lasts even longer (I think there's still one in the backyard the dogs keep bringing back in the house no matter how many times I try to throw it away). Granted I have dogs who love food, so I don't know if this would work, but it's worth a try. Maybe feed her from the Kong or something with canned food instead of her regular food so she has something to do.
Have you also tried leaving the TV on/music on for her?
I'll give a tendon or marrow bone a try.
I have her crate in front of a sliding glass door so she can see outside and she has the tv left on for her while I'm at work.
Her bouncing around in the crate is not bothering me per se, I'm just paranoid that she is going to dislodge a worm-clot if she doesn't sit quietly.
Maybe I will try the tranquilizer darts.
