I noticed that a friend's female 8 month GSD pup bobs her head as she walks. Right foot down, head down, left foot down, head up. Is this normal? I thought the gait should be more smooth than this. Or could this indicate some problem? Thanks in advance.
Could this be PANO as it does look like the pup is limping. What can be done if it is pano? I found the article on Ed's articles referring to pano when I did a search on limping, Thanks.
Most likely, its not pano. I did not get the impression that the shafts of the bones are tender. One way to test for Pano is by pressing the bones (not the flesh) of the suspected arm or leg in the mid point for tenderness.
czechgsd... I take it you know the dog in question?
Bobbing the head usually does accompany lameness. The palpatation test you described is not a substitute for taking a dog to the vet if you are not familiar with Pano. Only the X-rays are sure. Some dogs will cry if you squeeze them no matter what is going on. 8 months is about the right time for Pano to show up.
Is there any other irregularity in the dogs movement? Is this a new thing? What you are describing sounds right to me, but I can't see or touch the dog so there is not a whole lot I can do other than tell you to see a vet.
Deanna:
I dont know the dog and I should have been more careful with my language. "I wanted to say that I DO not get the impression..". A vet is certainly the best option. Perhaps Rickey will provide us with an update.
The pup is going to the vet in the a.m. We noticed that she is now lifting the left leg when she sits or stands. She picks it up so as not to put pressure on it. She had been bobbing her head for a few days. But today we noticed her favoring that left leg. She has been real healthy to this point. She is 8.5 months old. She is resting in the crate. At our soccer practice she wanted to play real bad, but we did not want to make it worse. Thanks for the posts.
She had stopped favoring that leg and limping by the next afternoon. Her owner had given her one Acriptin the night before. If it jumps to another leg she is going to the vet as it may be pano. I saw her today. She is not bobbing her head or limping. She was real active today. She had a couple days rest. My friend said she is more active also. Might have been a sprain or something. We are going to wait and see. Thanks.
