I have been feeding my 11 & 1/2 year old Chocolate lab garlic once a month for 6 years and recently i read that it is bad for them, but the article didnt say exactly why it was bad. I found garlic improves their breath and keeps them free from worms. Does anyone know why i shouldnt feed her garlic?
Garlic and onions contains thiosulphate; a toxin that causes hemolytic anemia. Onions are considered more potent than garlic when referring to thiosulphate. So unless large amounts of garlic are fed it doesn't typically cause any pathology.
...aside from medical reasons,i can't imagine giving a dog garlic because of the whiffy side effects! its bad enough with our 13 year old son who is nuts over spices, and literally eats powdered garlic straight, with the result that he STINKS to high heaven- if i tried feeding it to our service dogs,i think it would get us banned everywhere we go! Anja has enough problems with her lil 'angel farts'-tiny,ladylike things, but that are real SBDs..*groan* i would rather eliminate that first!
something that you might try instead could be to feed parsley,or for a quick fix give him the little breath strips that are out there for people...works fine, better than the dog mints, and is faster than brushing their teeth with listerine or toothpaste when you are out and about.

So what you're saying is that he's not dating yet, right?
....lets just say that his signifigant other is Anja! Anja doesn't mind in the least, but the rest of us chase him away from us! he loves to hang over the back of my chair to watch me work on graphics, but i can't stand the stench-i threw out that jar of garlic...now i have to keep him out of my Lawrys seasoned salt!
....but it doesn't tell how much it takes to cause a problem. isn't it like chocolate, where it takes a certain amount to body weight before its trouble?
