Does anyone know of a dog crate that fits in the back of a quad cab Dodge Ram pickup? Not in the bed, but something that fits inside the back doors. I haven't found any crates narrow enough to fit back there, even if it might fit inside the truck, it won't fit thru the slightly narrower door without a huge amount of annoyance to assemble the crate inside the truck. Does anyone know of tall narrow crates? I'm sure there's gotta be someone on this board with a quad cab truck and a dog, how do you transport your dog? Bare in mind, I don't want to buy a topper nor do I want to put my dog in the bed

Mike,
No truck here, but a similar problem. I have a Pontiac Vibe for my dog car. Even though a 500 could be put in it, I shortened, narrowed and rewelded a wire crate. It was definately worth the effort.

We built some very sturdy crates out of a product called Gridwall. THey use it in stores for displays. Cheaper than regular crates too. (My crates, however, are only 24 inches tall but I want the dogs to lay down in the vehicle)

Hey that gridwall stuff is pretty neat looking, I could cut n weld a wire crate, but gridwall looks easier Thanks for the suggestions. I'm kinda surprised nobody's come up with vehicle-specific crates. I saw a lady with a home made wooden crate in the back of her hatchback for her GSD at the Schutzhund club the one time I went over there to look.

WOW! I just googled that Gridwell stuff. Looks like I'm going to be really custom fitting a crate in my Vibe. Neat and reasonable cost! Thanks Nancy!

Bob, I found a place in Orlando that sells the stuff as well as the fittings to join 2 sections together at a 90 degree angle so it all bolts up nicely, it's definately cool looking stuff. Do some googling/yellow page looking for Store Fixture Suppliers, the place I found in Orlando specifically caters to furnishing other retail stores, from the looks of it, I can walk into the store, buy with no minimum purchases n walk out, the stuff is about $12-25 per section based on size, so if you can somehow find the stuff locally, it saves on shipping

Mike, I have a Nissan Titan Crew Cab pick up truck & I removed the rear seats & put in a sub floor (there was a 4+ inch raised ledge that ran the length of the back of the rear compartment that prevented the crates from lying flat if I wanted full sized crates to fit in there)& mounted the crates to that. I bought 24x36 crates with side doors. I don't know the height, but it is most likely about 25 inches.(the calapsable kind of metal crates-any of the plastics don't have side doors)Not as quiet as the plastic crates, but you can't have everything. I also wanted to have metal crates for better air circulation around the dogs now that there were 2 in there. There is also about 6 inches of space between the crates so that I can mount fans for the summer. They fit pretty snugly in there. When I only had the one dog I just folded the seats up & put a crate in sideways on the floor...the floor is flat in the back seat area so I could do this. I, too, did not want my dogs in the bed of the truck ..cover or not. This has worked out well. I think that they were 'life stages'brand crates. They have 2slide latches on the crate doors that lend themselves nicely to having a security lock put on them also which I like for traveling. That was the only way I could figure out how to make this work without having to spend a fortune for custom made to order & fit crates...or buy a new vehicle which I didn't want to do either. I really like my truck. Haven't done it yet, no time but I am going to put carpet under crates & along the back wall of the compartment with some foam or other insulation material to make it quieter & a more finished look in there. The elevated crates (due to the sub flooring )raises the crates so that they are 4 or 5 inches above that windows & this also adds to the air flow into the crates.

I have the same truck and the Pet Limo brand fits perfect. The size is a 400. My guy's 76 lbs so far and has enough room to stand and turn around. It's also a plastic crate so not as much noise as the the metal ones.. The only thing I do have to do is when I put it in I slide the driver seat up just a little to make it easier, put the crate in and can adjust the seat almost all the way back if I needed to. On those really hot days I can pull it out and place it in the shade or keep him in and run the AC.
The 500 will fit also but it's much more of a pain to get in , and you can't get the seat all the way back.
