I finally got my 8 week old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Saturday. Well he wasn't eating the puppy food they sent with him, so I figured i'd give him some raw hamburger meat. I did this yesterday and today. Just to get him used to it and see what he would do. Well he loved it. But now i'm noticing blood in his poo. Is this an internal thing or maybe the food is going through him so fast there is still a little blood from the food he ate. He goes to his first vet appointment tomorrow and I was going to bring it up, but worried about telling them I fed raw because I'm sure he will be against it. I'm on a military post and its a great german vet ive heard and highly recommended. So its kinda hard just to change vets until I find one that agrees with raw, guess i'll have to ask around. But until then, just wanted to ask all you guys and ladies what ya'll thought about the food and bloody poo. Thanks!
Take the dogs stool sample in and have it looked at
DO NOT LET THE VET VACCINATE HIM !! Not when there is even the smallest chance of another medical problem. Read the article and the emails on vaccinosis. (in the list of training artilec)
I called the emergency vet number and i'm taking him now. Thank you for your response. I won't let them give him any shots. For the record he has had Canine Caronavirus Vaccine and Canine Distemper Adenovirus Type 2 Parainfluenza Parvovirus Vaccine. I read the page you were talking about, i'm scared now. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
What you are experiencing is common (and a common mistake). I did this once YEARS ago when I was still feeding kibble and decided to give my dog a christmas dinner of turkey! After a round of antibiotics, it was all fine.
If you want to switch to raw, you need to do it gradually with this dog so that his body gets used to it! Also important to mix veggies with it. The pure hamburger was too rich for the dogs body. This can cause a pancreatic response which is usually limited to this one time and everything should be fine.
the vets tested him for parvo and it came back negative. he still has blood in his poo and only eating snow from outside. cant get him to drink water from his bowl. can i give him anything else to drink? also he doesnt touch his dog food at all. so i gave him hamburger meat and some pork today, its all i had. i plan to go buy some veggies tomorrow and the correct vitamins, and everything else that goes with the raw diet. so anyways, the vet tried to get a stool sample but it was nothing but blood. so they gave him some meds and i have to save some of his poo for 5 days and then send it in to be tested to see what the problem is. he plays okay, but the not eating dog food, that he came with and was used to, and not drinking water and pooing blood is just very concerning. i hope they get some results back from the poo when i get all the samples in as soon as possible. thanks for listenting!
the dog's GI tract needs a rest! stop feeding him right now!! pork and raw hamburger and veggies are going to make his gut work hard.
fast him for a full 24 hours. then give him rice boiled in beef or chicken stock until it is mushy. you can add some canned pumpkin. some plain, unsweetened yogurt is also good for reestablishing gut bacteria.
he may have pancreatitis. if so, feeding him more raw meat, especially fatty meat like pork, is not good for him at all!
rest his gut, then feed him only bland foods. did your vet check for pancreatitis?
Kristy - try giving him some ice cubes. Most dogs/puppies like to play with them and if not chew them, lick the water that melts. I would be careful with giving veggies right now - I don't think your pup needs any roughage at this point, but this is just my opinion. There are many more experts here that can tell you otherwise. Keep us informed.
Kristi's advice is good and correct! Do it. Once your dog is feeling better you can GRADUALLY start adding regular food to the diet. One should NOT be feeding pork in my opinion to a dog that is not used to a raw diet. Hamburger can also be very fatty if they are not used to it. Once you have fasted the dog, start with rice (boiled white rice) and broth mixed in. If that is going fine, you can introduce boiled chicken to the meal. I ALWAYS use white meat as it has less fat. Once this is going well, you can introduce other food. (you will need to decide if you are going to feed kibbler or raw. If you are going to go with raw do MORE research on the diet and how to feed it.
Hard to believe your vet doesn't understand what is going on. Did you tell them about what you fed that brought this on?
