Seriously, nice to see the folks with the different breeds posting about them, it adds depth to the forum!
handsome dog. is he a giant schnauzer or a black russian terrier?
i've been looking into someday getting the latter, but have been put off by the fact that 75 percent of them have HD. are the giant schnauzers sounder?
would you share with us the attributes of this breed that appealed to you?
Thanx for the compliments
Dylan is a Giant Schnauzer. I'm not familiar with Black Russians, but I know that Giants also can have HD problems. When I got Dylan I was told to put him on large breed puppy food (Nutro) until he's 2 years old because they have less calcium than the large breed adult food and that helps them grow slower and prevents HD, because the giants grow quick. Because Dylan was 80 lbs at 8 mos. even on the puppy food. So far he has had no health problems and he is a great companion. I like giants because they are very funny, goofy dogs and are very tolerant of kids, i.e., Dylan visited my 3 year old's daycare as her show-and-tell, and he just loved the kids. Even though he's real silly, he has a very serious side when it comes to protecting his family or property. As Will was telling me on the phone a while back, they keep that silly attitude for a long time, but it suits our style well.
what does it run you to keep him groomed? or do you do it yourself? just curious--i've always thought giants and bouviers were cool looking dogs...
With trial and error i figured out how to groom him myself. once i called to have a groomer cut him and they wanted to charge around 100.00 i couldnt see myself paying that much all the time.
