My 6 month old puppy is scratching at one spot on the floor. Then he lays down there. I was wondering why he would do this? I'm afraid he is going to rip through the carpet. How do I stop it?
Try covering the spot with a piece of furniture and see if your pup does it in another location or continues to try to get at that one location. Then you'll know if it's that one spot or just a behavior which will help dealing with it.
Sounds to me like he is just trying to make a nest...if he smelled something there and was trying to cover it up, I doubt he would lie down in the same spot. Is it always in the same spot? Maybe you could lay a blanket over the area and see if he still scratches...my dog will always scratch a blanket until it is perfect for her to lay down in. Occasionally, she will do the same on carpet when she is really really tired.

I would agree with this. That whole circling and fluffing thing has been explained in some behavior books I've read as a remnant of making a bed in tall grass or leaves, etc., in the wild.
But whatever --- I'm thinking that giving him a blanket in that spot might encourage him to use it instead of the carpet for the bed-building.
My dog too will arrange a blanket for several minutes before testing it (doing his donuts on it) and lying down. My dog Luna, who is gone now, would do that quite fussily, each time she prepared to lie on the blanket.

My 13y.o. american eskimo still does this, only on the linoleum floor.Try telling him to stop and lead him to his bed and scratch his bed etc.Happy trails.
I think you're right about giving him a blanket, Connie. That's why I asked about it being in the same spot.

Oh, yes, I was agreeing with you, absolutely.
They can be quite particular about that positioning, too! My Luna would work and work at it until she had a fold built up high enough to shield her face. She preferred that her face have something right in front of it (or over it, if she could burrow into a larger blanket) for sleeping. Like your dog, who makes the blanket *perfect* before settling onto it!
We bought the Leerburg DVDs and let him be out of his crate when we are training him or when we can have eyes on him at all times. All training, crate/obedience, are going very well. He is absolutely the sweetest dog we know! Sometimes, though, we are unsure about a course of action because we don't understand why he does some things so we ask for possible explanations so we can address issues properly.
