I'm a huge history buff and new to the sport of Schutzhund as I've just recently started working with a trainer to get my five month old German Shephered puppy "Dieter" ready for the sport. I am very curious as to when Schutzhund came into being exactly (I've heard the 60s) and who or what group started the sport? What were the goals of those who started Schutzhund and how, if at all, has the sport changed?
Thanks for any information you can give me.

Sport trrials with dogs pre dated schutzhund and early schutzhund differed a lot from modern schutzhund. Even the schutzhund of the 60's is quite different from todays version.
Since the SV was founded in 1899 and working trials were a showcase for the breed (not the show ring!!) they came hand in hand. I have seen old police magazines though that had working trials for police type dogs far ealier than this date. A Frenchman that was once the head of the Ring commission in France told me that Ring's first rule book came out in the 1890's predating the German sport (at this point it was not malinois that were predominant int he sport but GSD's).
One thing to remember about the dog sports in that they have been in flux for many years w/ versions existing from many many countries, RCI in France, SchH (VpG now), IPO, SVV, ZVV, all have similiar componants. These are just a few of the trials available in the dogsport.
