Neuter the "drive" out of her?

Hello All,
If my Sable (15 week old GSD) tests good for hips/elbows, I
would consider - ONCE she reaches PROPER breeding age (2 1/2
years, right?) - breed her with a Purebred GSD male. My
Sable is strictly indoors, so "accidents" can be ruled
out. Anyway, and actually, I will problably NOT breed her.
My main concern is her "prey drive" and neutering. I've done
the obligory search here, but found no hits that answer this.
Will neutering my female be wise if I want to protection
train/Schutzhund train her?
God Bless,
Martin

Spay the girldogs, neuter the boys! I always get that mixed up too unless I think about it!
Interesting question though, particularly if you wait until 2 1/2 to spay her, if her drives will decrease. It would seem to me that if you have been training her well, and she REALLY LOVES all the phases of Schutzund already (tracking, obedience, and protection) that she'll still really love it after the surgery. Possibly if you are trialling at the highest levels, tons of trials thru out the year and really competitive, you may see a slightly lower score (?) but as far as anything you'd really notice? I wouldn't think so.
Anyone know if all the bitches used in policework and protection are intact their entire working lives?

Naw- technically it's castrate the male (or orchidectomy for the more technical term), spay the bitch (or OVH). Neuter is for either sex. Sigh, it's usually used incorrectly even by the vets and their staff because that's what the clients understand.

Hello and thanks for the replies so far.
As far as the high scoring SHC, I would hate that she didn't
perform as great as she could of, if I alter her.
Anyone know if all the bitches used in policework and protection are intact their entire working lives?
Now, this is a question I am waiting very impatiently for an

This is my personal observation over many decades around lots of dogs (I'm NOT a professional trainer, so this is just "anecdotal" only) but in my experience, spaying a bitch frequently makes her even MORE driven.

Oh yes, spay them all and they get tons more drive, and amazingly enough, they get fat as well. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> Good thing you are not a professional. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Wow, really? So, with this as our example, can we (NOT that I
don't trust you both, Jeff and Candi!) get a third agreement or
disagreement here? Maybe even from a K9 Officer?
spaying a bitch frequently makes her even MORE driven.
With your experience Candi, do you feel this increase of
drive (and again, I hate to 2nd guess you two <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> , but if
we can get this collaborated or disputed...) is due to a sense
of frustration on the bitch (emotional response)? Or is it
more of a health related issue (physilogical/hormonal response)?
Man, God knew what He was doing when He created this forum! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Forgive me lack of Googling this issue, but is the tempermant
between males/females THAT different, allowing only males to
be "top-notch" enough to rate as an Officer?
So, that being the case (Once again, can we get confirmation?),
would my female not have a chance (IF she had the pedigree/
temperment/etc...) as a PSD?
God Bless,
Martin

I gave ALL the required disclaimers -- I've never owned a fat, lazy spay (which comes from over-feeding & under-exercising, but not from altering, IMHO)...
With all due respect, I do have a question though, since I'm rather new to these boards:
Is this forum JUST for professional trainers' comments ONLY, or is it a chat-board where pet owners may also post opinions (accompanied by appropriate disclaimers as to their amateur status) ??? I have no problem being corrected, Jeff, but there's no need to get ugly about it.
