I've got a training question. I'm having trouble getting my dog to walk backwards on my side, i've got him going backwards if he's in front of me, but my problem is transfering him to the side, i've used the fence, and tried to guide him over with the ball etc. but somehow i'm not conveying to him what i want him to do, any ideas? He trains really easy so i know it's me, thanks,
AL
Al, The answer to this question is basically the same for all training questions - break the exercise down into smaller pieces and teach the desired behavior piece by piece, then chain the peices together for a more complicated behavior.
For a more specific answer, teach your dog to walk backwards while you are in front of it ( ie, pushing it backwards while you step forward ) until it learns the "back" command.
Then teach it while the dog is in the "heel" position - much easier to do then.
Will, that's my problem, i've got it broken down but putting it together is what i'm having trouble with. If i get him on my side still facing me, as soon as i even blink my eyes he's at heel or between my legs staring at me like he did good, i thing i'm confusing him.
Jeff- there's no decoy in the picture yet, that'd be waaay to distracting for him to learn, i'm not frustrated, we're having fun, but he learns quick with everything else. Every time i see FR videos i think the defense of handler looks cool, so we're trying to learn it,
