I am training my new malinois puppy using Ed's DVD's. (I'm taking it slow because she's still very young.) I've encountered a lot of different opinions on trianing methods and was wondering if somebody could briefly explain what the old Koehler method was about. I read Ed's article on his philosophy of training. He talks about the "Yank and Crank" method and it's drawbacks. Is that what Koehler is about?
There are still Koehler books in the Library. I think it is fun to go back and read the copies that I have. This man was a very accomplished trainer, but it has been 60 years. He has more dogs trained under his program than anyone I have ever met. Yank and Crank was not what his program was about. This is a huge diservice to this man.
Having said all this, it is good to look at the past, but there are better ways to start a puppy off.
I still have a number of my old Koehler books that were in vogue when I started much of my training. Ditto with the comments here, although they are still an interesting read if your interested in reading some of the "traditional" styles in dog training. Koehler and Blanche Saunders were two of the "biggies" in the 40s - 50s.
Will, the cave wolves were so much easier to deal with. If they bit you, you ate them. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Your post made me look at the books on my shelves, where I found "Obedience & Security Training for Dogs", by Tom Scott (originally published 1967). Have you read it?
Is that a little, thin paperback? I may have that in the basement boxes. My Koehler books are printed in 62 and my oldest Blanche Saunders book is from 57. All bought new. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> See Will. I'm not THAT old. Any of my dog books from the 40s are hand me downs. I wasn't old enough to read till..at least the early 50s. Dick and Jane did a great job with Spot. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
