Hi,
I am looking for a collar that would work like a prong but yet is very fine in it's appearance. I have a large dog and the normal prong for him is a little too wide/bulky in appearance so I have looked at the micro and mini's on the site and I'm wondering whether these are for small dogs because they aren't as strong as the larger prongs or just because they are slimmer in appearance? I realise I would have to buy extra links for it to fit my dog, but would it be suitable? As usual I have been told to get a choke chain for him, but I really don't want to get one of those.
Is a dominant dog collar just for aggressive behaviour or can that control too? Another option would be to get a nylon slip lead, but again I don't think it would give me the control that I need and I value the skin on my hands Ok, I know I could get gloves to compensate that
Any ideas/help with this matter would be greatly appreciated

I have a 3mm prong instead of the 4mm prong, it makes a difference, n it'd work for your dog, but it's not as small as the micro prong. If your great dane is like my friends great dane then the micro prong and your pinky finger would work LOL but if your dog is a puller, I wouldn't count on that lil thing to hold up.

Is it just "looking" bulky or is it ineffective? If it just looks bulky but is effective, I would just leave well enough alone. I have an ACD that is approximately 60 pounds who is very powerful and I do use a micro prong on him. He has never broken one yet but I am not so sure about how a GSD or Malinois would be on one. Ed has a good page on choosing a prong collar:

Thanks for the replies. It's the bulky issue that I would like to address. I've been training him with great success from Ed's DVDs and members advice but have recently found out (dare I say it on this forum that he is of show standard and thought I might give it a go for some fun. Apparently when showing, the finer the collar and lead the better, but as he's still a pup, he wants to go play all the time with the other dogs in class and I was wondering whether a micro prong or a dominant dog collar could be used to keep him in check? They generally use nylon slip leads or fine chokers, but I thought could there be an alternative?
BTW, I can keep him in check on a flat collar, but I have an awfully achy arm afterwards

Sorry, forgot to add I'm dealing with a 100lb 6 month old Dane pup, who just loves to play with anything canine
He's not a puller normally, there's just a lot of distraction going on. Would it be better to just train, train, train with him? I do realise we're jumping a lot of steps in the training process, this now makes me think I am not being very fair to him. Am I right?

For the breed ring, I would not use a prong collar but a choke "jewelers" collar:

These are pretty solid chains that is what is commonly used for showing in the breed ring. The rule of thumb is to use the lightest collar and leash needed to control your dog. I use a snake chain and a 3/8 inch wide kangaroo lead when showing in conformation.

Thanks Ingrid, I'd heard something about 'jewellers' choke collars. Would I use this in the ring only or are they effective for training too (at ringcraft)? Do they work in the same way as an ordinary choke collar? Sorry for possibly dumb questions but I'm so new to this and need all the help I can get.

I have no experience in show, but a little with a dominant dog collar, and I do not think it is supposed to be used for corrections, so I wuld lean towards the micro collar.

No, I would not use a show chain for ringsport. I use a "fur saver" choke or a micro prong depending on the situation for protection and obedience work.
However, if you are showing in AKC shows, the prong is not even allowed on the show premises and you can get in big trouble if they see your dog wearing one no matter if it is in the ring or not.
Short answer: Welcome to the world of dog sports - where a different collar is used in almost every sport
