Hi
I've search the archives, I can't find a real clear answer on the following...
Annie, my import GSD, is 8mos today. I'm getting her hip prelims. Should I have her elbows x-rayed as well? I'm fine with doing it if it's necessary, I just had not researched it prior to dropping off the dog. I guess my focus and concern all this time has been on how her hips will come out. I would appreciate your input. I'm not an expert by any stretch, but I've always understood her pedigree to be sound relative to these kinds of issues.

It can't hurt, and isn't usually that expensive. I would, just to see what you're getting into ahead of time. Unfortunately, the pedigree does not guarantee in any way that your dog will have good hips/elbows . It helps determine the liklihood of issues, at best. Good dogs can and do throw bad hips. Good luck!

Yep, Jenni, I understand about pedigree not predicting...just didn't know if elbows were a concern at this point. Was trying not to throw more money after the dog on something unnecessary.
However...
Just got called from the vet. Elbows clear, but moderate hip displaysia. They're going out to a radiologist for a second opinion. Yuck.

Woody, I also reciently recieved a "moderate" on my dog. Other then taking him out of the breeding pool, (never had the desire to breed anyway), I'm not going to change his training as long as he doesn't show signs of lamenes. Many dogs can go a lifetime and never show problems, even with bad hips. Don't get discouraged.

Thanks, I appreciate you taking the time to post, Bob. I had been following your recent ordeal. It's been Murphy's Law on about every aspect of our time with Annie. Behaviorally she's been more that I ever expected, but wow, does it seem like we've hit about every developmental bump in the road over the last seven months.

Woody, I had the same thing, but had no problems (with hip) until he needed a hip repl at 10+ years! If you can, get him swimming as much as possible

Thanks for the reassurance. I've been reading up Ed's articles, the OFA site, etc...what kinds of experiences have you all had with what a vet will recommend? What should a vet recommend at this point? (That may not be a fair question, I just dislike being in the dark about this stuff. )
There are a couple of variables here. It is winter. I've not seen the films yet--may have been a bad shot, per Ed's article. Annie's 8mos. and has not gone through a heat cycle yet, so my understanding is that if she were about to begin one (no signs yet) that may distort things.

How accurate are the growth charts posted here? Not by weight, I understand there would be lots of variability off of that, but by percentile. I'm wondering if the proportions they list are relatively consistent with other references you all may have.
