I know it is not ok to chain a dog up and leave him chained for long periods of time, but would it be ok to chain a dog while doing yard work? If so, what size leash would be adequate? Thanks.
If your dog is not a big puller, then any of the kits you see at various pet stores would be OK, you are gonna be right there. I would get the cheapie.
What kits do you mean? Do you mean they have kits specifically for chaining dogs?
Tie out kits, aka tethers... basically a 15-50ft coated steel cable and a corkscrew or flat-blade that screws/hammers into the ground for you to attach the tether to. Handy for people who don't have a fenced in yard and want to let their dog have some restricted non-crate freedom while they do yard work <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
I would buy about 15' of galvanized chain, two swivel snaps and a tie out. the galvanized chain will not rust plus a dog will not chew on chain like he will the cable. The swivel snaps keep the chain from binding. I tie my dogs out whenever I mow the yard.
When I'm doing yard work I put them in the kennels. If you figure all the time and troble of chains and tangles it might be better to get one or two prefab chain link kennels. Try looking in the paper for used ones or "Trading Post" type of classifides
that is true, i may have missed the breed she is trying to contain. i have a climber. if they are in the fenced yard they are ok, but when they are kenneled in a 6ft high chain link they like to climb and bounce off the walls.i also have a chewer. i think my dogs are closterphobic.
Matthew, I almost never chain up my dog - I've only done it when camping because the Ranger told me to. The change in her behavior is readily apparent (separation anxiety/frustration), and I think that long term chaining of a dog is extremely detrimental to their mental health. I prefer to either crate or 'umbilical cord' my dog to my waist, and now that her training is progressing, she can also be put into a long down-stay. Ideally, the down-stay is my preference for doing yard work in the front yard. I still use a long line on her, just in case, and just keep a close eye on her.
